Advanced Digital Studio - Spring 2021, in collaboration with Antonia Banos
Diaphanous is defined as light, delicate, and translucent - especially of fabric.
The bus pavilion is located on the corner of Museum Rd and SW 13th Ave, Gainesville, FL. The design concept is based on the diaphanous qualities of fabric in relation to the stereotomic conditions of the natural ground. The structural form is derived by the continuous flow of mass folding up from the Earth to create a fragmented vessel that envelopes the user in a similar fashion to fabric. The lightweight and delicate quality of fabric is reflected in the pavilion through the suspension of stereotomic elements combined with the tectonic framework of translucent mesh.

The cellular perforations of the shell are defined by a suspended framework that supports a layered, translucent system of polymer fabrics which filter the natural light within the pavilion. The fabricated cells filtrate sunlight during the day and hold moonlight during the night, to not only provide the user a comfortable level of exposure and shade, but to also define a dynamic shadow condition on the surfaces of the pavilion and the ground. Overall, the diaphanous pavilion is designed to engage the user with the natural environment through the lens of fabric - light, delicate, and translucent.
